Old Fashioned Apple Crisp

Old Fashioned Apple Crisp

Ten years ago, when we bought the family farm, we planted two little apple trees—one Haralson and one Honeycrisp. This is the very first year we’ve had more than just a handful of apples, and I am so thankful!

Last Night I made our favorite old-fashioned apple crisp. Warm, cinnamon-y apples with that buttery oat topping… it is just plain fall in a dish.

Apple Filling

  • 6–7 cups apples, peeled and chopped
  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • ¾ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1½ tsp lemon juice

Crisp Topping

  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • ¾ cup old-fashioned oats
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter an 8×8-inch baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Stir well, then spread into the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the brown sugar, oats, flour, and salt. Add the cold butter. Using a pastry cutter or two forks, cut the butter into the oat mixture until it forms pea-sized crumbs.
  4. Spread the topping evenly over the apples and gently pat it into place.
  5. Bake for 40–50 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly.

Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream… if you dare!
