Farmhouse Slider Buns

There’s just something about a warm homemade bun straight from the oven! These soft, buttery little slider buns are the perfect size for Sloppy Joes, burgers, pulled pork, or little sandwiches. Around here, we like the smaller size — you can have one, two… or ten. 😂

Makes: 12 slider-size buns

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons warm water
  • 1 1/8 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 large egg (about 1 1/2 tablespoons beaten egg)
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 to 2 1/8 cups bread flour

For the tops:

  • Remaining beaten egg
  • About 1 1/2 teaspoons milk
  • Melted salted butter, for brushing after baking

Directions

  1. Add the milk, warm water, yeast, honey, sugar, egg, softened butter, salt, and 2 cups bread flour to your bread machine pan.
  2. Select the Dough cycle and start the machine. Check the dough during the first few minutes of kneading. If it seems too sticky, add the remaining flour a little at a time. The dough should be soft and slightly tacky, but pull away from the sides of the pan.
  3. When the Dough cycle is finished, turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface.
  4. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and gently flatten it into a small slider-bun shape.
  5. Place the buns on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover loosely and allow them to rise for 30–45 minutes, or until noticeably puffy.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  7. Mix the remaining beaten egg with about 1 1/2 teaspoons milk. Gently brush over the tops of the risen buns.
  8. Bake for 12–15 minutes, until beautifully golden brown. The centers should reach about 190°F if checked with an instant-read thermometer.
  9. Brush the hot buns lightly with melted salted butter.
  10. Let cool slightly before slicing — assuming you can keep your hands off them that long. 😂

Farmhouse Tip: These are especially good for sloppy joe sandwiches because the smaller bun lets you make exactly as much sandwich as you want — and then go back for another!
