Grandma's Homemade Sloppy Joes

Forget the can—these are better than Manwich! At least that's what everyone who tries Grandma's Homemade Sloppy Joes tells us. They're sweet, savory, a little tangy, and slow-cooked until the homemade sauce is thick and delicious.
Pile them onto one of our warm Farmhouse Slider Buns and you've got one of our favorite easy suppers.
Ingredients
- 1½ lbs. ground beef
- ½ onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 1 cup water
- ¾ cup ketchup
- 1 dash Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- 1½ teaspoons salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- Pinch of cayenne pepper, or to taste
Directions
- Brown the ground beef and diced onion in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain excess grease if needed.
- Stir in the garlic and green pepper. Cook and stir until the pepper begins to soften.
- Add 1 cup water, stirring and scraping the bottom of the pan to loosen all those flavorful browned bits.
- Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, black pepper, and cayenne.
- Transfer the mixture to your slow cooker.
- Cover and cook on LOW for 3–4 hours, until the sauce has thickened and all those flavors have had time to come together.
- Serve hot on Farmhouse Slider Buns.
Farmhouse Tip: If you want your sloppy joes a little thicker, leave the slow-cooker lid slightly cracked for the last 20–30 minutes to allow some of the moisture to cook off.
